If your question is, what is their responsibility, then - it is simple. A Godparent is promising to God that they will keep the child in their prayers and in as much as possible, ensure that the child is brought up with christian instruction and guidance. I believe in the olden days, godparents were often times legally or morally responsible for the children if the parents were to die. Now days, most parents have wills and spell out the physical custody, etc. As a baby is baptized, the sponsors promise and answer for the baby. To the best of my abilities, I have tried to remember my godchildren on their birthdays and Christmas, reminding them that I continue to pray for them and show concern over their spiritual well-being. I am not so very good at the praying part, but - I am concerned for them I hope to get better at the praying part. There is always so much to pray about.... Gramma Hennie actually made full-size afghans for all 13 of her godchildren in the years since Grampa Joe died.
