I just realized that my husband's name is a biblical name :) How silly. Its so common that I forget!
I couldn't find much about Mark so here's an excerpt from his book...
10:2-9
Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
"What did Moses command you?" he replied.
They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."
"It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Nathanael
John 1:45-51
Phillip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote -Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
"Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked.
"Come and see," said Phillip.
When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."
"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."
The Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
(John 20:30) Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Terah
Deuteronomy 30:19&20
This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
*I kinda feel like loving God is a secret club. Obviously it's not supposed to be secret...but when you find out that someone else has your same feelings, it's maybe just a little fun. I hope to keep finding members...

Abraham
"No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations." Genesis 17:5
I really love how bold Abraham is at the end of chapter 18...He's totally barganing with God!
I also love 15:1 "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward"
"and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me." 22:18
The old testament kinda just fascinates me -There is SO much missing from the narratives. But then I suppose who can put so many lives with so many years into words. And I guess that maybe the briefness can make it applicable to our own lives? I might sound better on paper with just a couple highlights. Lol. As long as they were the, "God will provide the lamb" (chapter 22) moments and not the, "laughing over child bearing years" (chapter 17).

like old friends
the more I pick up my bible the more the stories (specifically today moses) seem familiar and the characters more like a favorite tv show. and just like we await the fall season of our fave prime time shows, someday I hope to just as eagerly await cracking open my bible.

baby was great at church today
sunday services are getting easier and easier :) obviously having a tantrum-free worship isn't the whole point...but it sure makes it easier to concentrate (I will try and scan the opening hymn in later today. it was AWESOME).
the service was was good and very appropriate for the "new year". pastor talked about time wasted and gifts of hours of life that we haven't utilized to their full God praising advantage. and because it was a baptism (our cousin's sweet little daughter) there were nice references to little children and after the services the pastor even noted how much he loves hearing the chatter of the toddlers in the congregation * and yes. there were years when I cringed at the sound of young kids. they totally destroyed my perfect high church experience. but I'm realizing (my mom even said I could sing along to liturgy before I could speak sentences) that these sunday services are a core of our faith that is so important.

my five
-to think about our tzedakah box more often
-not to fib anymore
-to give a nod to my religion in daily conversation
-to attend a jewish service
-to make a wholehearted attempt to open an unbeliever's mind to Christianity
again. WOW that will be a hard one to qualify. but I will obviously be honest in my answer to myself...although...I'm also good at making excuses to myself.
the way this came up is I was feeling really good about work (my company won a recent large bid, I'm busy but efficient -so much so that I got up the nerve to suggest they have someone "assist" me) and then tried to relate that to called-workers work. how cool must it be to think that you may have saved someone's soul?! and then of course I realized that even though it's not my 9-5 job right now, I could do that. yes. I could do that.
there's a family that's been in my prayers lately ~ a childhood friend of mine is packing up (wife and four kids even) and moving accross the country; leaving a profitable construction business behind to lead the youth of a needy congregation. may the Lord bless them and keep them.

resolutions
-to think about our tzedakah box more often
one of these days I will have to pick a way to get these monies to the needy
-not to fib anymore
yah, I softened the word "lie" by calling it a fib
and I know I won't be able to perfectly fulfil this commitment but I'd like to state it this bluntly anyway
the up side to trying not to lie is that I make more thoughtful decisions and commitments :) try it. took me a couple weeks but I've almost got it down now
-to give a nod to my religion in daily conversation
not sure how to qualify this yet without making a daily check list
-to attend a jewish service
because I'm pretty interested in it all . . .

looking for guidance in reflection
read the suggested torah reading for shabbat shuva which was deuteronomy 32:1-51 because I needed some guidance in my reflection for the first of these ten (wait. I think now just seven left) days. I kept reading because I was intrigued and you know what? MOSES DIDN'T GET TO LIVE IN THE HOLY LAND. he served his purpose for the Lord and then he died. and I understand that that was God's plan...but wow. I hope he really "enjoyed the journey". crazy.

rosh hashanah two days late
thursday was the start of a new jewish year and they have a nice custom of casting off the sins from the previous year (atoning for them if possible) and making resolutions for the upcoming.
news article about celebrations
neat idea for the days of reflection/resolution
obama wishes...interesting
rosh hashanah (jewish new year) definition and what to do until yom kippur (day of atonement)
my resolutions?
-to think about our tzedakah box more often (five bucks in for tonight)
-and I'm not sure what else...this is a festival of reflection...I will do that and get back to y'all.

eb and flow
was discussing favorite movies with my bro-in-law this afternoon and realizing that fave flicks were really based on my mood at the time and/or what was surrounding that event (a night that was looked forward to for weeks or a night that was frazzled with late work/supper). same thing could be said for bible verses and/or readings. because there is SO much bible to read and re-read. just like there is an endless supply of movies in the netflix queue.
one thing that will help me is my mom's gift subscription to focus on the family :) I finally got the chance to read a little and my first impression is that it's awesome! the magazine delved into topics that I was suprised about and that I felt were "real world" issues and not just glossy magazine stories. thanks mom *

be holy because I am holy (I turned off tyra and opened my bible)
pastor's sermon this week and a lot of my readings have mentioned that we need to be working toward being good people. be holy because I am holy (1 peter 1:16) is what peter relays to us AND the best defense is a good offense :) seriously though. the more I read from the bible (didn't I post the other day about the thoughts rattling around in my head meaning nothing without some bible substance) the more I steer toward the good of the world. it was easy today to turn of tyra banks during the few moments of alone time I had because I was almost craving the bible like one craves the next chapter of a good book * I suppose that's the holy spirit working.
1 peter 1:24
for, "all men are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord stands forever."

our inheritance of eternal life
our inheritance of eternal life can never perish spoil or fade- says peter 1:4
this verse caught my eye as I was reading about peter because it's harvest time and along with harvest comes some rotten cantaloupes (or substitute your fave garden veggie here). we're not always sure why the fruit goes bad / the excessive dampness or the slugs may not be outwardly evident. but you have to be prepared when biting into a plum (again, substitute your experience) to find a beetle. THIS IS NOT TRUE OF OUR ETERNAL REWARD. there will be no surprises.

Galations was a good read
Galations was a good read (i find myself rereading to grasp meanings) and i think i now understand some standard verses....
I was just impressed at how this one book summed up the difference between the OT (olde testament y'all) and the new testament.
I liked how paul explained that those rules were meant to keep the world from utter chaos before the savior came to forgive all. I also liked that paul came from being a super jew (I think I'm right about all this) and turned into a super Christian. it makes it really believable when he explains why those rules of the past are no longer needed now because God had fulfilled his promise *
I also liked the paragraph about why we can ignore the ot laws but still can't sin sin sin (2:17-21). I've heard about that but appreciated how paul points out: if I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker.

A consideration
A consideration of how much faith we put into only what we can see... Pregnancy vs baby
*I just want to expound on this a little bit more.
was talking with my aunt who is a newer grandma :) and she was explaining how her nerves were calmed when she heard her new born grand daughter's scream through the waiting room door.
why would it be more comforting that baby is out in the cold unpredictable world as opposed to relatively safe in her mommy's tummy? not that I disagree. there's certainly a sense of control when you can see if baby is twisted in her blanket and uncomfortable or when you have been experiencing the same harried travel so know that she's unhappy because she's just tired and bored like you are.
but
the unseen baby in the womb is so protected! there's no questions about feeding or sleeping or if she's too cold or just pinched her finger.
ok. I didn't quite wrap this thought up yet. but maybe I just want to point out that it is illogical yet built in to our human psyche.

topics
ok. I know I've been slacking lately but family vacation (free time!) is coming up so I plan to hit the book hard next week.
will still be looking for verses about art (although I suppose verses about praising are appropriate. ran across a couple of those. I would consider art to be praises and celebrations).
will also be contemplating the eb and flow of religious devotion and study (thanks mom for the comment a couple days ago and for the discussion tonight :).
will possibly dive into rosh hashanah/new year (our jews for Jesus calendar pointed out the importance of the calendar and how it makes a time and pace for all our emotions regarding God).
will also perhaps look more into the life and times of peter...
any other suggestions, please pass along!
